Theraplay: What it is and How it Works
Theraplay is a type of play therapy that involves both the child and the caregiver, and it focuses on enhancing your child’s behavior in meaningful ways. This approach utilizes joyful play as a pathway to deeper understanding and connection between you and your child. By strengthening your relationship, Theraplay can enhance your sense of connection and mutual understanding, allowing your child to no longer need to resort to problem behaviors. Guided by a skilled therapist, you’ll engage in playful interactions that foster delightful moments, transforming your relationship and exploring new ways of connecting.
Why the Theraplay way?
Looks at the parent-child relationship as “the client”, not just the child or the parent. The focus will be on improving how you two come together.
Focuses on the here and now and utilizes appealing activities that can help children “buy into” the therapeutic process and bring about change without the need for the child to talk about their problems.
Involves hands-on playful activities aimed at fostering connection and delight, giving you and your child big doses of positive interactions (which is especially needed during times of problematic behaviors at home).

Imagine this: As you enter the office with your child, you’re greeted by a friendly therapist who welcomes you both with a warm smile and an engaging invitation to hop on one foot or skip to your special seats. This playful start sets the tone for a joyful experience together.
Once settled, the therapist introduces a series of simple, fun games designed to foster connection and build your child’s confidence. Each activity is crafted to be both enjoyable and meaningful, helping your child feel successful and capable.
As you play, the therapist gently guides the interactions, encouraging moments of laughter and cooperation. They may introduce quieter, nurturing activities, creating a balanced experience that honors both playfulness and connection.
Throughout the session, you’ll notice how your child begins to respond more openly to you, laughing and smiling more readily. The therapist offers insights and support, helping you recognize the magic in these interactions and how they strengthen your bond.
As the session draws to a close, the therapist might suggest a few activities to try at home, allowing you to continue this joyful connection beyond the therapy room. You leave feeling uplifted, more attuned to your child, and filled with hope for the journey ahead.
